Kolkata, September 12 (HS). Officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have taken dental impressions of Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer accused of raping and murdering a junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy was arrested in August in this case.
According to sources, a CBI team reached the Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata late Wednesday evening. Sources associated with them said on Thursday that there they questioned Roy on the basis of new evidence and also collected his dental impressions. In the investigation of rape and murder cases, the dental impressions of the accused are often considered important evidence.
Roy was first arrested by the Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team, which was conducting the preliminary probe into the case. Later, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court handed over the investigation to the CBI.
The main focus of the CBI investigation at the moment is to ascertain whether only Sanjay Roy was involved in this heinous crime or there were others behind it. The investigating officer is also looking into whether there was any tampering with evidence in the investigation or serious lapses in the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police.
According to sources, the preliminary investigation has found several lapses, including the level of language used in the post-mortem report, carelessness in the video recording of the autopsy, contradictions over the clothes worn by the victim, and discrepancies in the seizure list prepared by the Kolkata Police.
The CBI is trying to find out whether these were due to mere negligence or were done deliberately with the aim of mislead the investigation.
Last week, Governor C.V. Anand Bose had also highlighted the flaws in the investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police in this case. On September 6, a special court in Kolkata extended the judicial custody of Sanjoy Roy by 14 days.
