Sitaram Yechury became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975. In 1984, he was inducted into the Central Committee of the CPI(M). He later became the party's general secretary in 2015. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005. He is considered a prominent face of left-wing politics.
Academic and Political Career of Sitaram Yechury
Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 in Madras (Chennai) in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family. His father Sarveshwar Somayajula Yechury was an engineer in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. His mother Kalpakam Yechury was a government official.
Sitaram Yechury studied at President Estate School, New Delhi and secured the first rank at the all India level in the Higher Secondary Examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education. He then studied BA (Hons) in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He then did his MA in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University. When he was a student at JNU during the Emergency, he was arrested.
