Maintaining the greenery of the earth is becoming a big challenge. The human race that shouts slogans of development with a fake smile on its face is actually writing the story of destruction. Baba Nanak equated natural blessings with Guru, father and mother and worshipped the nature in whose lap the human being flourished. The Green School program can prove to be effective in providing a suitable environment for studies in schools, making their campuses green and creating an environment friendly environment.
This program has been started by the Center for Science and Environment New Delhi in all government and private schools of the country including Punjab. The specialty of the Green School program lies in the fact that it recognizes the rule of doing something with hands instead of relying on verbal statements. Also, its purpose is to provide an opportunity to the children, who are called the future of the country, to learn about the environment through practical activities so that they remain strongly connected with the thought of environmental protection. So, this is a great platform where children will learn to take care of the environment practically. In this age of social media, today most people share countless posts on the occasion of Environment Day or any other day related to it. These posts are related to environmental protection and compassion towards nature. But if the person sharing the post is asked whether he has planted as many trees as the posts he has shared for the awareness of environmental protection, the answer will be no, except for a few. Through this program, we have to give information to the children about how the resources are and what is the level of consumption and how to use the resources properly. The depletion of natural resources for greed is responsible for its decline. Climate change is currently a global issue. In developed countries, people take decisions together to tackle this problem.
To solve this big problem, teachers can work at their level and can also contribute in creating a campaign by involving children on a large scale. The message of reducing one's needs to the society and children can be effective in controlling climate change. Efforts should be made so that this mantra gets embedded in everyone's heart and mind.
It is appropriate to talk about Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki of IIT Bombay who left his house in 2020 and made a solar bus his office and resting place with the main objective of connecting 100 percent of people to the use of solar energy by 2030. He says that every second of 24 hours during every activity from brushing to using electricity, we are producing greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gas is the responsible factor for climate change. Prof. Solanki advises that if we reduce our needs by wearing unironed clothes and giving up a dull look for one day a week for a start, we can help to a great extent in preventing climate change.
Under the Green School Programme, six areas – air, energy, food, land, water and waste – are audited and rankings are given based on effective management. The audit conducted in the school building not only helps in maintaining the sanctity of the temple of education by making it nature-friendly but also instills in the students an understanding of living in harmony with nature.
It is said that fresh air is necessary for the health of the mind and body. To fulfill this, it is necessary that the classrooms are airy, there is adequate lighting. Under this, it is also seen which means of transportation are used in schools, what kind of fuel is used in them. If the vehicles used are not polluting the air, then its number increases. By following these conditions, not only the air of the school will be clean but the environment outside the school will also be pollution free. In the energy section, all types of energy used in the school like electricity, petrol, diesel etc., LPG or wood fuel are evaluated and identified how efficiently the energy is being used in an organization. A five star power tool gives better ranking.
Good food is important not only for good health but also for a good environment. According to this, it is advisable not to use packaged food and carbonated drinks in schools because the salt, sugar and fat content in them has a negative impact on health and promotes diabetes and heart diseases. On the other hand, the plastic used to pack these food items pollutes the air and soil as it is not digestible. An important part of this program is the land under which greenery in the school campus should be at least 35 percent of the total area and no pesticides of any kind should be used. The Miyawaki method tells how to create a good dense forest in a short time. When there is an abundance of trees in a place, it is certain that biodiversity will develop automatically. With greenery all around, the environment will become fresh, the study environment will also become conducive. Water conservation is also an important aspect of the Green School program as it is linked to the existence of life. To conserve water in the school premises, it is recommended to use sprinkler system, drip system for plants along with preventing water leakage. To get good ranking in the Green School Programme, it is very important to have a water harvesting unit in the institution.
The more resources are used, the more waste is generated. For a good ranking it is necessary that waste is generated as little as possible and the waste generated is divided into wet and dry waste, compost is made from wet waste and dry waste is given to units for reuse
There is a Japanese saying that it is never too late to start any good work. The veteran Director of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Dr. K. S. Bath and Project Scientist. Mandakini and District Coordinator Ashok Kalia are full of pubs and are ready to give every possible guidance. Deputy Commissioner of District Hoshiarpur, Komal Mittal and District Education Officer Lalita Arora are determined to make schools green schools by taking special interest in this project. Come on! Let us all make our respective schools green under the Green School Program and win prizes. Naale Punna, Naale Phalia. The environment will also be protected and the schools will also be made beautiful and prizes will also be given.
