PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme
The Government of India has approved the PM Surya Ghar-Free Electricity Scheme on February 29, 2024 to increase the share of solar rooftop capacity and empower residential households to generate their own electricity. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore and is to be implemented by FY 2026-27. Under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, a subsidy of 60 per cent of the solar unit cost is provided for systems up to 2 kW capacity and 40 per cent of the additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity. The subsidy limit is capped at 3 kW capacity. At current benchmark prices, this would mean a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for a 2 kW system and Rs 78,000 for a system of 3 kW or more.
The interested consumer has to register on the PM Surya Ghar-Free Electricity Scheme national portal. This is to be done by selecting the state and the power distribution company. The national portal will assist households by providing relevant information such as suitable system size, profit calculator, vendor ratings, etc. Consumers can choose the vendor and the brand of rooftop solar unit they wish to install.
