A discovery raised suspicions that a highly evolved strain of polio had leaked from the same lab. In 2014, a 4-year-old boy in China's Anhui province was infected with this virus. The name of this lab is Wuhan Institute of Virology and the US agency FBI believes that the corona virus also originated from this lab.
Research by France's Pasteur Institute found that the strain, called WIV14, was genetically 99 per cent identical to a form of poliovirus that was stored in a lab in Wuhan. The discovery has once again raised questions and concerns about safety protocols in Chinese laboratories.
China's laboratories are already being looked at with suspicion for their dubious role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Now this new research can make the attitude towards Chinese laboratories even more serious.
Which was first identified in a child's sample in 2014. The child was diagnosed during an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in the Anhui region at that time. Scientists were surprised after WIV14 was found in the child.
Genetic analysis showed that the WIV14 strain is most similar to the Socket A strain, the original polio virus developed in the 1950s. It is used in the manufacture of vaccines.
After this report came out, questions have again started being raised on China's laboratories. In February last year, it was claimed that the corona virus leaked from a lab controlled by the Chinese government. However, China has denied this.
However, many countries including America hold China responsible for this. According to reports, the corona virus originated from bats and research on bats was being done in a lab in Wuhan. The place where the first case of corona was found is near this lab.
