The festival of Mahashivratri has special significance for us. Lord Shiva is worshiped on this day. On this auspicious day, devotees observe a fast to please Lord Bholenath. However, those observing fast on Mahashivratri should keep some important things in mind, because a small mistake can make the fast incomplete. It is believed that true and unwavering devotion during the worship of Lord Shiva fulfills every wish. If you are also fasting on Mahashivratri, then it is important to know what should be eaten and what not during the fast.

According to the Panchang, Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month will start on 8 March 2024 at 09:57 PM and will end on 9 March 2024 at 06:17 PM. Mahashivratri puja is performed during Nishita Kaal, which will last only for 51 minutes this year, starting from 12:05 am to 12:56 am on March 8, 2024. Therefore, fasting and worship will be done on Mahashivratri. Which is Friday on March 8, 2024.

What to eat during fast:

According to Pandit Rajendra Tiwari, people observing fast on Mahashivratri can consume fruits like apple, banana, orange and pomegranate. These fruits provide energy and help in keeping the stomach full. Apart from this, people observing fast can include grains like coriander, cumin and fennel in their diet.

Special Drinks:

People observing fast during Mahashivratri can enjoy Thandai, which not only quenches hunger but also cools the body. Thandai is often distributed as Prasad among the devotees of Lord Shiva. People can also make Thandai with their favorite fruits.

You can eat these things during the fast:

Buckwheat flour is allowed during the fast, and one can prepare dishes like halwa, puri or paratha for consumption. It helps prevent weakness during fasting. Dry fruits like cashews, raisins, almonds and makhana can also be consumed during Mahashivratri fast.

Do not consume these things even by mistake during Mahashivratri.

Those observing fast during Mahashivratri should avoid consumption of garlic and onion. Also, white salt is not consumed on this day.

During Mahashivratri fast, grains like rice, wheat, barley, millet and maize are avoided. Legumes like peanuts, gram, kidney beans and peas are also not eaten.

During Mahashivratri fast, meat in any form is strictly avoided and use of oil and salt is also prohibited.

Alcohol is also avoided on the day of Mahashivratri.
