New York, September 7 (HS). Taylor Fritz defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals of the US Open 2024 on Friday to reach the title match where he will face top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy on Sunday. With this win, Fritz also became the first American player to reach a Grand Slam final in 15 years.
World number 12 Fritz won 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the final.
“He troubled me a lot at the beginning and I was a bit nervous. I told myself to stay in it, hold serve and put pressure on the scoreboard. I did everything I could to stay in it. If I hadn’t done that, I would have always regretted it,” the 26-year-old Fritz said after his win.
Earlier, Sinner overcame humid conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium to beat Britain's Jack Draper 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-2 on Friday to reach the US Open 2024 final.
Sinner injured his wrist after falling in the second set but kept his composure and made it to the final.
Draper, on the other hand, vomited three times in the second set as he struggled in the heat and humidity, which left his shirt soaked in sweat. 10 double faults also failed to help the 22-year-old reach his first Grand Slam final.
