How much plastic waste is produced in the world
Researchers at Leeds University in Britain have recently done research in this direction and said that so much plastic waste is produced in the world every year that if we pile it up, it will be as high as the famous 'Empire State Building' of New York City. The building is 102 floors high, so imagine how big a mountain of waste it creates. The study examined locally produced waste in more than 50,000 cities around the world.

Every year 5.7 million tons of plastic pollution is generated in the world, with countries in the Southern Hemisphere contributing the most. India is number one. India produces 10.2 million tons of plastic waste in a year. This figure is more than double the amount of plastic waste generated by the country in second place. Governments around the world fail to collect and dispose of plastic waste from 15 percent of the world's population. This 15 percent population includes 255 million people from India alone.

The research ranked the following countries as the largest producers of plastic waste.

5. Pakistan
Assurances for China
Despite being ranked fourth, China makes reassuring comments in the report that China is making good progress in reducing its waste. Bangladesh, Russia and Brazil are ranked sixth, seventh and eighth in the list of countries causing plastic pollution.
The US and UK were in that order.
The report presented by the researchers said that the US, which generates 52,500 tonnes of plastic waste annually, is ranked 90th on the list and the UK, which generates 5,100 tonnes of plastic waste, is ranked 135th.
These cities produce the most plastic waste
Talking about cities spreading plastic pollution, Nigeria's largest city 'Lagos' ranks first in the world. After that comes India's capital 'Delhi', Angola's capital 'Luanda', Pakistan's 'Karachi' and Egypt's 'Cairo'.
