Government should sell onions at subsidized price: Now the government has come into the field to control the rising prices of onion. In the last one year, the prices of onion have increased by 50 to 60 percent. The central government has started selling onions at cheaper rates by controlling these prices and providing financial assistance to housewives.
National Cooperative Consumers Federation and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) are selling onions at the price of Rs 35 per kg through special vans in various places of the country. Now they will start selling onions in Delhi and Mumbai.
NAFED and NCCF are managing the government's buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion, which will be sold through its stores and mobile vans at 38 retail locations in Delhi-NCR, Parel and Malad in Mumbai.
Onion will be sold in Ahmedabad next week
Apart from mobile vans of NAFED and NCCF, onions will be available at subsidized rates from central warehouses and Mother Dairy's Safal outlets. The second phase of this initiative will cover the cities of Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Raipur next week. The sale of this onion will start across the country from the third week of September.
Onion sold at Rs. 20 per kg. 60-65
At the beginning of the current calendar year, the price of onion was Rs. 20 per kg, today the price of onion was Rs. 60 to 65. Onion prices vary depending on the location and quality. Therefore, the central government has started this initiative to give relief in onion prices. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi announced that the government will increase the quantity of onion distribution based on the price trend. At present, the government has a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion. As compared to the average price of onion on September 4, Rs. 49.21 per kg. There has been an increase of 47.39 percent by Rs. 33.41 per kg.
