Maharashtra: Sculptor Apte arrested for making Shivaji's statue | News India

Idol actor Jaideep Apte has been arrested from Kalyan in Maharashtra. Apte had built a 35 feet high statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Rajkot Fort of Malvan, which broke on 26 August. Opposition parties in Maharashtra strongly protested against this incident. The police formed five teams to catch the statue maker. Apte was absconding for more than a week and a look out circular was also issued against him.

Apte was arrested on the night of 4 September when he came to meet his family.

According to reports, Apte reached his home to meet his wife and mother by dodging the police in the dark by wearing a mask. But the policemen on duty got suspicious, they stopped him, questioned him and found out that he was an APT and arrested him. According to Apte's family, he left for Malvan on August 26 and since then he has no contact with his family. The police were investigating to catch him.

Arrest or surrender of Apte?

After the arrest of Jaideep Apte, his lawyer Ganesh Sovani claimed that Apte has surrendered himself to the police. The lawyer claimed that Apte's family decided to surrender in view of the heated political atmosphere in the state. It is worth noting that in December last year, on the occasion of Navy Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the statue of Shivaji Maharaj. An FIR was registered against Apte and the structural consultant of the statue, Chetan Patil, under various sections.
