Delhi High Court summons Wikipedia representative in contempt case

New Delhi, 05 September (HS). Delhi High Court has issued a notice of contempt of court to Wikipedia for calling a news agency a propaganda tool of the government. Justice Naveen Chawla's bench said that if the court's orders are not followed in future, we will deal with it strictly. The court fixed the next hearing date on October 25 and ordered the representative of Wikipedia to appear in the court.

The news agency had alleged that information about them has been given on the Wikipedia website that it is a propaganda tool of the government. On this, the High Court had ordered Wikipedia to disclose the user who wrote this information but Wikipedia did not disclose the user. During the hearing today, the High Court, angry at Wikipedia not complying with the previous order, said that if the order is not followed in future as well, then we will deal with it strictly. During the hearing, Wikipedia said that its headquarters is not in India. On this, the High Court said that it does not mean anything that your headquarters is not in India. We will consider requesting the government to close your business in India. If you do not follow the law of the country, then you should not work here.

In fact, the news agency has filed a petition in the High Court saying that Wikipedia has allowed posting of derogatory content about it. While giving the description of the news agency in Wikipedia, it is written that it is a propaganda tool of the government. This is tarnishing the image of the news agency. Advocate Siddhant Kumar, appearing on behalf of the news agency, demanded that the identity of the user who posted such details about it be disclosed. Advocate Tine Abraham, on behalf of Wikipedia, has said that it edits any information of the user. On this, the High Court said that despite this, Wikipedia cannot escape its responsibility. The High Court made it clear that Wikipedia will have to follow the law of the country.
