Georgia High School Shooting: A shooting incident has been reported at a high school in Georgia, USA. Here a student opened fire in which 4 people died and 9 people were injured. Two students are also among the dead. This incident took place on Wednesday at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour away from Atlanta. The suspected attacker, 14-year-old Colt Crane, has been taken into custody by the police.
The dead included two students and another teacher. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting. Leyla Sayarath, a junior at Appalachian High School, told CNN she was sitting next to Colt before the shooting began.
Leyla said Colt left his algebra class at 9:45 a.m. without taking a pass. I thought he was skipping class. But at the end of class, someone over the loudspeaker instructed his teacher to check his email. A moment later, Colt came back outside the closed classroom door.
A girl in the class went to open the door for him, but backed away when she saw he had a gun. I think she saw we weren't going to let her in. Colt then began firing through the open door of a nearby classroom.
Students in the classroom hid behind desks as they heard the continuous gunfire. Most simply fell to the floor and piled on top of each other. The teacher turned off the lights while students pushed the desks in front of them for safety.
Layla's friend was in the classroom next to where the shooting happened. She described her friend as being very scared, he looked like someone had shot him and had blood all over his body. He seemed scared and was limping. Layla described Colt as quiet and shy, often giving one word answers during discussions.
Gun Violence Archives reports that there have been at least 385 mass shootings so far this year. That means an average of more than 1.5 mass shootings per day.
