In the biggest ever crackdown against drug peddlers, which lasted from four hours on Saturday evening to four hours on Sunday morning, Delhi Police officials raided 325 places across the city and arrested 944 people.
Among those arrested were 74 narco-criminals, from whom various types of banned drugs were seized. A case has been registered against these people under the NDPS Act. 54 smugglers have been arrested under the Excise Act. However, the most notable aspect of the raid was that 816 peddlers were caught under the Preventive Property. These people include liquor smugglers and criminals actively involved in the drug trade, but since no narcotics could be seized from them during the raid, the NDPS Act could not be imposed on them.
Officers from 15 districts were deployed
The operation was part of the fifth phase of Operation Kavach, a crackdown on drug sales in Delhi. The initiative is part of the government's zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, which is directly led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Such a huge recovery from Delhi points to a wide and well-organised network of smugglers operating in the city. For this massive raid, officials from 15 districts received information from Crime Branch officials over the phone that a drug-related raid was to be conducted in their area, following which the operation was carried out with utmost care and precision.
