According to British media, due to fear of cholera, about 130 people boarded the fishing boat illegally, but this boat does not have the capacity to accommodate so many people. As a result, the fishing boat, which was en route from Lunga, Nampula Province, Mozambique to the main island of Mozambique, capsized in the middle of the road and all 130 people on board drowned in the middle of the ocean.
As soon as information about the incident was received, other ship operators at sea tried to save people, but without success. So in this tragedy only 5 people could be saved, while more than 90 people have died. The rest are those who have not been detected at sea. Many children were also aboard this boat. Therefore, the death toll is still likely to increase.
The eastern southern African countries of Mozambique and Madagascar are currently facing a cholera epidemic. A year ago, Cyclone Freddy had wreaked havoc on both these countries. In which after the cyclone, many provinces of both the countries were submerged in water. In which more than 10 lakh people were affected. More than 1 lakh 32 thousand houses were destroyed, while 6 lakh 40 thousand people were forced to relocate. When more than 1 thousand schools collapsed.
It has been almost a year since the cyclone hit Mozambique, but the country of Mozambique has still not recovered from it. Cholera epidemics have spread to several countries in eastern South Africa, including Mozambique, due to flooding following Hurricane Freddy. This epidemic has increased to such an extent that WHO has appealed to other countries also to protect people from this epidemic. The cholera epidemic in Mozambique has gone out of control, forcing people to flee for their lives.
A similar incident took place in Nigeria on 14 June 2023. A boat capsized in the Niger River in Kwara, Nigeria. 103 people died in this tragedy, while 97 people went missing. Also 100 people were saved. According to media reports, there were 300 people on the boat. Two boats of tourists going from Tunisia to Italy have sunk. On August 7, 2023, two tourist boats sank near the island of Lampedusa, Italy. Two people died in this, while 30 people went missing. The dead also include a woman and her one-year-old daughter.
On 17 December 2023, a boat going from Libya to Europe sank. More than 60 tourists traveling in a boat drowned near Libya. The boat overturned in front of the strong waves of the sea. Women and children were also included in this boat. The boat left for Europe from Libya's Jawara port carrying 86 people. The boat sank off the coast of Greece on 14 June 2024. Around 500 people are feared dead due to the boat sinking. So far 79 bodies have been recovered. According to the information, the boat was going from Libya to Italy. There were 700 to 750 people on the boat. Out of which only 104 people could be saved.
A similar incident occurred in Mozambique, where people were traveling from Lunga town in Mozambique's Nampula province to Mozambique's main island to escape cholera when the tragedy occurred late Sunday night. So that they could get proper treatment, but what did these people know that they were going to another island to escape from Yamraj, Yamraj was waiting for them in between.
