73 percent voting in Bengal, fate of 88 candidates captured in EVM

Kolkata, May 20 (HS). Elections were completed on seven Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal on Monday. With 73 percent voting till 5 pm, the fate of 88 candidates has been sealed in the EVMs. It has been told by the office of the State Election Officer that among the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the fifth phase of voting in West Bengal, Arambag parliamentary constituency had the highest voting percentage of 76.90 percent. After this, 75.73 percent voting took place in Bangaon, 74.50 percent in Uluberia, 74.17 percent in Hooghly, 71.18 percent in Shrirampur, 68.84 percent in Howrah and Barrackpore.

Voting began at seven in the morning and continued till six in the evening. More than a thousand complaints were received from various political parties throughout the day. A clash broke out between Trinamool and BJP supporters in Khanakul area of ​​Arambag constituency over stopping polling agents from entering polling stations. Security personnel have also recovered two country-made bombs from the area.

BJP's sitting MP and party candidate from Hooghly constituency Locket Chatterjee faced opposition from Trinamool workers led by Trinamool MLA Asima Patra. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from different parts of Howrah constituency. In Liluah area of ​​Howrah, BJP accused Trinamool workers of booth blocking, leading to a clash between the two groups.

Local BJP leader Subir Biswas was allegedly beaten up by Trinamool goons outside a booth in Gayaspur area of ​​Bangaon constituency. Later he was taken to the hospital. In Kalyani area of ​​the same constituency, Union Minister and BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur was caught using the identity card of his rival Trinamool candidate Vishwajit Das inside a polling booth. The man was later removed from the booth by central forces.

There were more than 1.25 crore voters in this phase. Nearly 800 companies of central paramilitary forces, the highest ever, were deployed in the voting.

In Barrackpore, BJP candidate Arjun Singh is challenging Trinamool's Partha Bhowmik and CPI(M)'s Debdut Ghosh. Talking about Bangaon, in this constituency BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur is contesting against Trinamool Congress's Vishwajit Das. Bangaon is mainly located in North 24 Parganas district. It is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.

At the same time, 19 candidates are in the fray in Howrah Lok Sabha constituency, which includes high profile names like Prasun Banerjee from Trinamool and Rantidev Sengupta from BJP.

In Uluberia, Trinamool's Sajda Ahmed is contesting against BJP's Arun Uday Pal Choudhary and Congress's Azhar Molik.

In Srirampur, Trinamool's Kalyan Banerjee is competing against BJP's Kabir Shankar Bose. Earlier a fight was seen here between Congress and CPI(M). Another notable constituency is Hooghly, where BJP's Locket Chatterjee is pitted against CPI(M)'s Manadeep Ghosh and Trinamool's Rachna Banerjee.

In Arambag, Trinamool's Mithali Bagh is contesting against BJP's Anup Kanti Digar.
