Mumbai: A serious accident occurred when the Neelkamal boat going to Elephanta near Mumbai collided with a Navy speed boat. After the search operation for the second consecutive day, another dead body was found near Karanja Ghat where the boat had sunk. In such a situation, the death toll in the boat accident has now reached 14. The bodies of two people, a 43-year-old man and a seven-year-old child, who were missing after yesterday’s accident, have been recovered. While the search by the Navy and Coast Guard will continue tomorrow to find the custody of the seven-year-old child.
Naval helicopters and boats of the Navy and Coast Guard launched a search operation the next day after two passengers, including a seven-year-old child, went missing in the Gozari accident of an Elephanta-bound passenger boat.
The missing passengers have been identified as 43-year-old Hansraj Bhati and seven-year-old Johan Mohammad Nisar Ahmed Pathan, police said. However, till tonight it was not confirmed that the body found today is that of Hansraj Bhati.
The new engine is being tested in a Navy speed boat near Karanja on the Nilkamal ferry boat that travels from the Gateway of India in Mumbai to the UNESCO World Heritage Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination. The speed boat lost control and collided with the passenger boat causing a horrific accident.
Due to which the passenger boat overturned and within no time the boat overturned in the water. As soon as information about the accident was received, teams of Navy, Coast Guard and Mumbai Marine Police immediately reached the spot.
In which the rescue operation was conducted with the help of 11 boats of Navy, one boat of Coast Guard and 3 boats of Yellowgate Police Station and boats of local fishermen. The help of four Navy helicopters was also taken in the search operation.
Till Wednesday night, a total of 98 people, including passengers and crew members on both boats, including two injured, had been rescued during the search operation. 13 people including three Navy personnel died in this accident. Now the number of deaths due to the discovery of this body has increased to 14.
Inquiry ordered by Navy Board
Following the accident, the Navy constituted a board of inquiry to investigate collisions between naval boats and ferry boats. An accident investigation board has been ordered to establish the facts of the case.
Naval Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives in the accident and wished speedy and complete recovery of the injured.
