Nag Panchami is considered an important festival in Hinduism. The snake god is worshiped on this festival which comes in Shravan. At this time Lord Shiva and his beloved snake are worshiped. The names of these 7 snakes are Sheshnag, Vasuki, Takshak, Karkotaka, Padma, Kulik, Shankh.

Sheshnag
Sheshnag is called the king of the netherworld. It is believed that the earth rests on his teeth. Sheshnag is the servant of Lord Vishnu. Laxman in Ramayana period, Balram in Mahabharata are considered to be a part of Sheshnag. Sheshnag is the son of Kashyap Rishi's wife Kadru. His worship has special significance on Nag Panchami.
Vasuki
The Lord has worn the Vasuki snake around his neck. Vasuki Nag Neti (rope) was created during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). According to the Puranas, Vasuki Nag is a very big snake. He is the servant of Lord Shiva, so worshipping him on Nag Panchami fulfils wishes.

During the Mahabharata period, King Parikshit was bitten by Takshak Naag due to the curse of Shamik Muni. To avenge his father's death, Parikshit's son Janamejaya performed a yajna to destroy all snakes. With the blessings of Brahmaji, Aastik Muni completed this yajna and saved the life of the naag. This day was the fifth day of the month of Shravan. This is why the festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated on this day.
