This time there has been a significant increase in the number of voters in the Delhi Assembly elections. More than 7 lakh new voters have been added compared to the year 2020. However, a decline in the number of voters has also been recorded in some assembly constituencies, including key seats like Patparganj, Delhi Cantt, and New Delhi.

Maximum number of voters decreased in Delhi Cantt.

There has been a maximum decrease of 60,000 voters in Delhi Cantt Assembly constituency in five years, due to which this seat has now become the smallest in terms of number of voters. At the same time, maximum number of new voters have been added to Vikaspuri assembly, making this area the largest assembly seat of Delhi.

Increase in total voters, but decline in 14 seats

According to the voter list released on January 6, 7 lakh new voters have been added in Delhi compared to the 2020 elections.

  • This increase has been recorded in a total of 54 assembly constituencies.
  • In 14 assembly constituencies, which include seats like New Delhi, Rohini, Mangolpuri, and Trilokpuri, the number of voters has declined.

Electoral impact of changed equations

According to political analysts, this change in the number of voters will impact election strategies and equations. Political parties will have to prepare their strategies keeping these changed figures in mind.

Five lakh applications still pending

More than 5 lakh applications to become voters in 70 assembly seats of Delhi are still pending. These applications have been received by the Election Commission in the last 20 days.

  • The Election Commission will verify these applications by January 17 and decide whether to include them in the voter list.

Due to low number of voters

1. Migration during COVID-19:

  • A large number of people left Delhi during the pandemic.
  • Many returned, but changed areas, leading to a reduction in the voter list.

2. G-20 summit and slum clearance:

  • In areas like New Delhi, Delhi Cantt and RKpuram, slums were removed for beautification, which affected the voter turnout in these areas.

3. Cleaning of voter list:

  • The Election Commission conducted a door-to-door survey between August 18 and October 16 and removed the names of wrong voters from the list.
  • During the summary revision from October 29 to November 28, names of a large number of voters were removed.
