7 killed as jeep carrying pilgrims to Pandharpur falls into well

Mumbai: A jeep carrying pilgrims returning home from a pilgrimage to Pandharpur fell into a well in Jalna, killing seven people. With the help of locals, three injured were pulled out of the jeep and admitted to a hospital for treatment. It is being said that the driver lost control of the jeep while trying to save a bike rider. The police have taken cognizance of the matter and started further investigation.

It is worth noting that earlier on the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, five people were killed and 42 were injured in a collision between a bus and a tractor carrying Dombivali devotees going to Pandharpur on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The bus broke the roadside barricade and fell 20 feet down into the valley. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh.

Devotees who went on a Pandharpur Yatra yesterday for Ashadhi Ekadashi lost control of their jeep this evening while trying to save an oncoming bike rider near Tupewadi on Rajur Road in Jalna. The jeep got stuck in a roadside well. There was no door in this well.

On receiving information about this incident, police, local people, fire brigade reached for rescue work. They recovered seven bodies from the jeep in the well. While three people were injured, they were taken out and rushed to the hospital. There are said to be 12 to 15 passengers in the jeep. An attempt was made to take the jeep out of the well.
