Six Sri Lankan people, including a mother and four small children, were stabbed to death in Canada's capital Ottawa late Wednesday night. The father of the family was also injured in the attack and is in the hospital. Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs said a “sharp weapon” or “knife-like object” was used by the suspect, identified as Fabricio De-Zoysa. Fabricio De-Zoysa, a 19-year-old Sri Lankan student, has been arrested and charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, police said. The dead include Darshani Ekanyake, 35, her seven-year-old son, Inuka Wickramasinghe, and their three daughters: Ashwini, 4; Rinyana, 2; and Kelly, two and a half months, who was born in Canada.
When the first officers arrived at the home, the father of the family was outside and yelling for someone to call 911, the police chief said. Police received two emergency calls at 10:52 pm on Wednesday. The father remains in hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. “This was a senseless act of violence perpetrated on completely innocent people,” Stubbs said.
