The absolute rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has ended. Assad, who fled with his family after rebels seized control of large parts of the country, has taken refuge in friendly Russia. With this, the civil war situation that had been going on in the country since 2011 ended. But the question is, how did Syria’s 53-year-old dictatorship end in just two weeks? Where has the Syrian army, which has been protecting Assad’s stronghold for decades, weakened?
In 1973, Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad’s father, seized power in a coup in Syria.
In 1973, Bashar al-Assad’s father Hafez al-Assad took power in a coup in Syria. He ruled Syria like a dictator. Revolts and massacres broke out in Syria during his reign. Being from the minority Shia community, he was accused of ignoring the majority Sunnis. Bashar al-Assad ascended the throne after his death in 2000.
Even Bashar did not know what happened on 27 November
Bashar, who came to power with an agenda of modern Syria and development, soon followed the same path. The path on which his father Hafiz walked. As a result, discontent among the Syrian people began to grow. In 2011, an incident in Tunisia sparked discontent. This was the time when rebellions started one after another in Arab countries. Assad continued to crush the rebellion with the help of Russia and Iran.
Even Bashar did not know what happened on 27 November. On November 27, rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) announced an uprising against the Bashar al-Assad government. On this day the rebels launched their first attack.
They launched a massive attack on Assad’s forces in western Aleppo. Occupying northwestern Syria, they captured the capital, Damascus, in just two weeks. During this period, a total of 37 people were killed from both sides. Rebels have captured 13 villages, including the Syrian army’s largest base in Aleppo.
