Shimla: 50 people are feared dead in landslides caused by glaciers and cloudburst near Shrikhand Mahadev in Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla and Kullu. Due to heavy rains in Himachal, 36 people went missing in Samej village of Rampur, while six people are still missing in Bagi bridge of Kullu. Apart from this, heavy rains also occurred in Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jharkhand.
Cloudburst has caused devastation in three districts of Himachal Pradesh. Many buildings have been damaged and many people are reported missing. Search operations are also being conducted to find these people. At such a time, Minister Vikramaditya Singh has said that about 50 people are feared dead in this accident. However, the official number will be known only after the search operation is over.
The cloudburst tragedy occurred in Samej village of Rampur in Shimla district. At this time, a video shot by a tourist has also surfaced, in which the glacier breaking can be seen causing massive destruction. A total of 410 rescue workers including NDRF, ITBP, SDRF, CISF, Police and Home Guard are conducting search operations with the help of drones. Seeing the rescue workers in Samej village, elderly Bakshi Ram said that he has lost 16 members of his family in the Shrikhand landslide.
Meanwhile, thousands of devotees are stranded in the Himalayan pilgrimage site Kedarnath due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand. Rescue operations have been going on for three days to save them, in which more than 10,500 devotees have been shifted to a safe place. Some people were airlifted by Air Force helicopters. Officials said that more than 1,300 devotees are stranded in Kedarnath, Bimbli and Gaurikund but are safe. NDRF, SDRF and police personnel are engaged in rescue operations to save the devotees. Indian Air Force's Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters are also airlifting some devotees.
Torrential rains have also wreaked havoc in Jharkhand and West Bengal in eastern India. In Jharkhand, the rains in the last two days have washed away several roads, uprooted trees, damaged houses and even caused a pond to collapse. However, no casualties have been reported in the state so far, the weather official said.
