A 5-storey under-construction building collapsed late Sunday night in Kolkata, West Bengal. The incident occurred at around 12 o'clock on Sunday night in Metiabruz, South Kolkata. So far 10 people have been saved. Many more people are feared buried under the debris. As soon as information about the incident was received, Kolkata Police and Fire Brigade teams reached the spot and started rescue operations.
According to the information, there are many hut-like houses around the multi-storey building under construction. The building fell on top of a hut-like house. Along with the administration, local people also helped in the rescue work. 10 people were rescued from the debris and admitted to the nearby Calcutta Medical Research Institute. There is no news of any loss of life or property in this incident yet.
A senior police officer said that the building was vacant at the time of the incident. Along with this, there are also slums on which the building collapsed. People were sleeping there. No death has been reported yet. Gas cutters are being used to search for people. Kolkata Police, disaster management and fire services teams, several ambulances are present at the spot.
Police said that the area of the incident site is crowded. Therefore, caution is being taken in the search operation. According to the police, construction work was going on in the collapsed building for the last six months. Local people allege that the construction work was going on without the permission of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Police.
