5 Shaurya Chakras and gallantry medals awarded to CRPF jawans on Independence Day | News India

Independence Day 2024 has been celebrated with great pomp across the country. In a remarkable recognition of valour and dedication, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been awarded the highest number of Police Medals for Gallantry this year, receiving a total of 57 awards. The honours were announced by the Union Home Ministry on the eve of the 78th Independence Day. In recognition, the CRPF has been awarded 5 prestigious Shaurya Chakras, one of the country's highest peacetime gallantry awards for displaying exceptional courage and bravery under adverse circumstances. The remaining 52 medals include other Police Gallantry Awards that reflect the exemplary service of the CRPF in ensuring national security.

According to a senior CRPF official, the award recognises outstanding performance in two major operational theatres. Of the total 57 decorations, 25 have been conferred for acts of gallantry during operations in Jammu and Kashmir, which is facing persistent security challenges. The remaining 32 medals are for exemplary service in anti-Maoist operations in various Left Wing Extremism-affected states, where the CRPF has been at the forefront of combating militancy and maintaining peace.

Other awardees include Sub-Inspector Roshan Kumar who was posthumously awarded the gallantry medal for his heroic action against Maoists in Bihar in February 2019. Assistant Commandant Teja Ram Choudhary has been awarded two gallantry medals for showing exceptional courage this time. The officer said, the operation against terrorists is continuing in Jammu and Kashmir.

103 gallantry awards to armed forces

The Jammu and Kashmir Police received the second highest number of gallantry medals at 31, while the Uttar Pradesh Police and Maharashtra Police won 17 medals each. Notably, President Draupadi Murmu approved 103 gallantry awards for armed forces and central armed police forces personnel on the eve of Independence Day 2024. These are four Kirti Chakras, including three posthumously; 18 Vir Chakras, including four posthumously; one Bar to the Sena Medal (Gallantry); 63 Sena Medals (Gallantry), including two posthumously; 11 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry); and six Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
