5 killed, 42 injured in collision between bus carrying devotees and tractor in Dombivli

Mumbai: Five people were killed and 42 others injured in a horrific accident involving a bus carrying devotees from Dombivli to Pandharpur on the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi and a tractor on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway last night. The bus broke a roadside barricade and fell 20 feet into a ravine, police said on Tuesday.

Devotees of Lord Vitthal living in Dombivali were going to Pandharpur in Solapur to celebrate Ashadhi Ekadashi. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vivek Pansare said that the accident took place last night near Panvel in Navi Mumbai.

Police said that the bus driver hit the tractor while trying to overtake at high speed. It is worth noting that driving a tractor on the expressway is not allowed, yet the tractor came here and after the accident, the bus broke the barricade of the expressway and fell into the valley on the side of the road.

The police was informed about the incident. Then senior police officers, staff, traffic police, fire brigade reached the spot for rescue work. They pulled out the passengers from the bus after a lot of hard work in the dark. In the accident, maid Hari Patil (age 65), Ramdas Narayan Mukadam (age 71), Gurunath Bapu Patil (age 65) and tractor driver Tarvez Saladin Ahmed (age 27) who were travelling in the bus and their companion (age 30) died. 42 injured devotees were admitted to a private hospital. The condition of seven of them is said to be critical. The police have taken cognizance of the matter and are investigating further.

Financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased

The state government has said that Rs 5 lakh will be paid to the family of each deceased in the accident. The government will also bear all the expenses of treatment of the injured.
