Rome: A major incident of theft has come to light in Italy. Some 49 gold artefacts were stolen from an exhibition near Lake Garda on Wednesday night. All these statues were created by Italian sculptor Umberto Mastroianni.
Forty-nine artworks worth 1.2 million euros (over $1.3 million) were stolen from the exhibition titled 'Like a Warm, Flowing Gold'. The exhibition opened in late December and was scheduled to close on Friday, March 8.
One of the 49 statues, called 'Umo/Dona' (male/female), was later found at the exhibition complex, CNN reports. However, the remaining 48 idols have not been identified yet. A spokesperson for the property told CNN that the theft is under investigation. Giordano Bruno Guari, head of the estate, said he believed the theft was the work of a large gang.
