35 years ago BJP's 'Ram' campaigned for Congress, sought votes in the name of Ram – News India Live

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Apart from Kangana Ranaut and Hema Malini, no big Bollywood leader is active in the Lok Sabha elections. Both of them have been nominated. At the same time, actor Arun Govil, who played the role of Lord Shri Ram in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana, which became famous in the 80s, has also been given a chance from Meerut this time. An interesting case related to Arun Govil is in discussion when he wants to advance his political career by joining BJP.

Arun Govil went to ask for votes in the name of Ram

Arun Govil had gone to seek votes in the name of Ram 35 years ago and did not get votes then. Actor Arun Govil, who became famous for his role of Ram in the 80s, came to campaign in Uttar Pradesh. At that time, he had gone to campaign for the then Congress candidate and appealed for votes by raising slogans of Jai Shri Ram, but his appeal did not prove to be effective. People did not vote for the candidates for whom he campaigned.

Sunil Shastri, son of former PM Shastri, asked for votes for him.

According to experts, at that time it was a matter of compulsion for Congress to raise the issue of Arun Govil and Ram. In 1984, Amitabh Bachchan had won from Allahabad seat of Prayagraj. Later he resigned due to controversy over Bofors scam. Then in 1988, by-elections had to be held to elect a new MP in his place. At that time Congress had given ticket to Sunil Shastri, son of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. V.P. against him Singh stood as an independent candidate. At that time, the then serial actor Govil was taken to Prayagraj specifically for election campaign to make Sunil Shastri victorious. After this, Congo leaders Sitaram Kesari and Jitendra Prasad took Arun Govil to a public meeting of Arul Govil. He addressed a public meeting at PD Tandon Park. They raised slogans of Jai Shri Ram. Congress leaders also raised slogans in the name of Lord Shri Ram.

A crowd of more than one lakh had gathered

According to sources, Arun Govil, who came to address the gathering at that time, said that such a crowd had never happened before. Hearing this, when Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was there in 1941, people started gathering in Akdathat. Before the start of the evening meeting, more than one lakh people had gathered in and around the grounds. The area around the ground was also full of people. At that time thousands of women came to worship Ram with puja plates. When these people came to Prayagraj with the puja thali, a crowd of lakhs gathered. Then people came for Arun Govil. The surprising thing is that even after this public meeting, Sunil Shastri lost. He got only 92 thousand votes. V.P., who contested against him as an independent candidate. Singh was sitting in the front row. Some informers got more than 2 lakh votes.
