Modi government on the backfoot The Narendra Modi government at the Centre had to bow down to the pressure of opposition parties and NDA allies and had to take the decision to cancel the recruitment through lateral entry. With this, the government has completed a hat-trick of political surrender as it has had to admit a major defeat on the political front for the third time in the last fortnight.
The government's decision to end recruitment through lateral entry has also increased Rahul Gandhi's political weight. The perception is getting stronger that Rahul Gandhi is effectively playing the role of the leader of the opposition by raising one issue after another to threaten the Modi government.
Earlier, the government was forced to submit the bill to amend the Wakf Act to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The government introduced the Wakf Amendment Act in the Lok Sabha on 8 August with great fanfare, but due to opposition from BJP's allies, the government had to submit a bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for the first time in its ten years of rule. Movement to amend the Wakf Act. Hindus are upset with the BJP's retreat on the amendment to the Wakf Act.
Then under pressure from the opposition and allies, the Modi government had to withdraw the Social Media Broadcasting Bill. The government had sent the draft of the broadcasting bill to the stakeholders but then suddenly announced the withdrawal of the bill on 13 August.
The media called this bill of the government demonic and strongly opposed it, saying that it would affect freedom of expression. Since the opposition was also in a fighting mood on this issue, the government had to bow down. The government has announced to release a new draft of the broadcasting bill but it is clear that the new bill will not have the old provisions to deal with social media.
Now the government has scored a hat-trick by deciding to cancel recruitment through lateral entry within three days of publishing the advertisement. The decision to cancel recruitment through lateral entry is a big setback for the Modi government because there was a lot of opposition to lateral entry recruitment since 2018. BJP leaders themselves believe that the government's retreat on three important issues proves that the Modi government is very weak politically.
Both JDU and LJP protested on the issue of recruitment through lateral entry. Earlier BJP did not consider NDA allies. It used to impose its decisions on them, but since it does not have a clear majority in the Lok Sabha, it cannot ignore allies now.
