A special court in Bengaluru has ordered the handing over of jewelery and property to the government in the disproportionate assets case against late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jaya Lalitha. 27 kg of gold and diamond jewelery and valuables worth crores of rupees. Consideration was given to selling or auctioning the remaining 20 kg of gold, but Jayalalitha also inherited some jewelery from her mother.
Additional City Civil and Sessions Court Judge H A Mohan directed the valuables seized from Jayalalithaa to be handed over to the Tamil Nadu government by March 6-7. The onus was placed on the Government of Tamil Nadu to take action for disposal of disproportionate assets. The hearing took place in Karnataka on the instructions of the Supreme Court, hence all the property of Jayalalitha was in the treasury of Karnataka under the supervision of the court.
On September 27, 2014, a special court sentenced Jayalalitha to 4 years in jail for possessing disproportionate assets and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore. Along with this decision, it was also directed that the valuables seized from Jai Lalitha should be sold to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or State Bank of India (SBI) through auction.
