The sudden disappearance of another promising daughter of India, who had crossed the seven seas to the United States with the dream of higher education, has created a stir. Sreeja Reddy, a 23-year-old student from Telangana, studying in Boston, the capital of Massachusetts state of America, has been missing under mysterious circumstances for the last five days. According to the information received, Shreeja had come out of her apartment in the evening for a normal walk, after which she did not return to her room. His mobile phone is continuously switching off and he is not able to contact him in any way. As soon as information about this tragic incident was received, the Boston Police Department swung into action and a formal search operation and public alert has been issued to search for him in the entire area.
Such sudden disappearance of Sreeja has spread deep concern and restlessness among the Indian student community living in America and NRIs. In a big and busy city like Boston, no trace of an Indian student for several consecutive days is raising many unresolved questions. Local investigating agencies have intensified the investigation of their possible route, the last network tower of the phone and the footage of nearby CCTV cameras. Police have appealed to the citizens of the city and the local community that if anyone has any clue about Sreeja, they should immediately share the information on emergency numbers.
The missing student has been identified as Sreeja Reddy, originally a resident of Shabdullapuram village under Kanagal mandal of Nalgonda district in the south Indian state of Telangana. Belonging to a middle-class family, Sreeja has been a very bright student. He moved to America about one and a half years ago to pursue his bright future and take his career to new heights. While pursuing her post graduation at a prestigious educational institution in Boston, she was also working a part-time job locally to meet her expenses and gain experience.
Sreeja’s father Koya Yadagiri Reddy shared his unbearable pain while talking to the media in Telangana. With a heavy heart, he told that his daughter had been living in Boston for the last one and a half years and studying diligently. Just a few months ago, she had come to India on vacation and returned to America after spending a whole month with her parents and relatives in Nalgonda. At that time no one had even dreamed that they would have to see such a terrible day shortly after returning to America. According to the family, Sreeja is a very disciplined and responsible girl and she never went anywhere without prior notice.
The link to the entire incident is being pieced together on the basis of information lodged by Shreeja’s father and statements of friends. On November 2, Sreeja went to college like usual. After completing her classes she returned safely to her room in the afternoon. In the evening he decided to go out for a walk to freshen up a bit. While leaving the room, he was wearing a black winter jacket and blue jeans. According to eyewitnesses and initial technical analysis, she had walked about a kilometer away from her room, but has not been heard from since.
When Sreeja did not return to her room as the evening passed and night fell, her other roommates started calling her, but her mobile phone was completely switched off. Friends searched the surrounding areas, parks and places of acquaintances, but could not find any trace of him anywhere. The next day i.e. on November 3, a formal complaint was given to the Boston Police at the local level. After this, on November 4, considering the seriousness of the case, the Boston Police Department officially issued a missing person alert and requested the public for help in searching for them.
Boston Police investigators believe that Sreeja’s last activities may have been concentrated in the coastal areas around Carson Beach or Harbor Point. Police say that this area is located just half a kilometer from his residence. Police teams are continuously conducting search operations on the roads, parks and footpaths around the beach. However, even after several days, no concrete clue has been found and the apprehensions are continuously deepening.
Here in India, after the matter came to light, the Telangana government has become completely active. Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister and Nalgonda local MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has immediately personally intervened in the matter. The Minister has directly contacted the top diplomats of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and the Indian Consulate General working in New York and Boston. He has appealed to the Indian government to intensify the search operation by putting pressure on the US State Department and the local police administration. Apart from this, officials of ‘Telugu Association of North America’ (TANA), the largest Telugu diaspora organization active in America, have also been contacted so that the local Indian community there can coordinate with the police and provide all possible help at the ground level.
