23 including one Indian jailed in Uzbekistan, 68 children died due to cough syrup of Indian company

A court in Uzbekistan has sentenced 23 people to jail in connection with the death of 68 children due to spoiled cough syrup. Each accused has been sentenced to different terms of imprisonment and an Indian national has been given a maximum prison term of 20 years.

The court convicted these 23 people on charges of tax evasion, sale of counterfeit medicines, abuse of office and bribery.

The cough syrup that the children died after drinking was produced by an Indian company, Marion Biotech. It was distributed in Uzbekistan by a company called Curamax Medical. The court has sentenced Raghavendra Pratap Singh, executive director of Curamax Medical, to a maximum of 20 years in prison. Who is an Indian citizen.

Along with this, the court also ordered a compensation of $80,000 to the families of 68 children who died. Besides, an order was given to give the same compensation to the families of four children who became disabled due to drinking this syrup. Compensation will be recovered from seven out of 23 culprits.

In Uzbekistan, 88 children fell ill between 2022 and 2023 and an investigation revealed that all these children were given cough syrup of an Indian made company and it contained poison. Diethylene glycol was found in a cough syrup called Doc-1 Max. Due to which 68 children died.

Amidst the uproar in the country, investigating agencies have registered a case and started investigation. The case was heard in the court and ultimately the court sentenced 20 people to jail.
