Anshuman Gaekwad: Former Indian cricket team batsman and Team India coach Anshuman Gaekwad has passed away after a long illness. He was suffering from blood cancer and was undergoing treatment in London. He breathed his last at the age of 71. This player has played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. Gaekwad was the head coach of the Indian cricket team from 1997 to 1999 and then from 2000.
BCCI helped in Anshuman's treatment
BCCI gave Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the treatment of Anshuman Gaikwad. Apart from this, 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev and other members also helped for the treatment. However, he lost his battle with cancer.
Under the coaching of Anshuman Gaekwad, the Indian team registered a spectacular victory against Australia in the final of the triangular series in Sharjah in 1998.
Gaikwad made Pakistan happy
In those days, Anshuman Gaekwad opened with Sunil Gavaskar. This cricketer played such an innings against Pakistan in September 1983 that no Indian can forget. In the Jalandhar Test match played in September 1983, he batted for 671 minutes and troubled the Pakistani bowlers. Anshuman Gaekwad scored 201 runs in 436 balls which included 17 fours.
BCCI gave Lifetime Achievement Award
In a career spanning 12 years, Gaikwad played 40 Test matches in which he scored 1985 runs. During this, he scored 2 centuries and 10 half-centuries. He scored 289 runs in 15 ODIs. He scored the highest score of 201 runs in a match against Pakistan in Jalandhar in 1983. Apart from this, Gaikwad also served as a national selector and President of the Indian Cricketers Association in the 1990s. It is known that in June 2018, the BCCI honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
