2000 Note Change: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a major update regarding the 2000 rupee note. RBI said that due to the annual liability associated with the bank, the facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 notes in the bank will not be available on April 1, 2024.

The Reserve Bank of India said in a statement on Thursday that this facility will be restored in 19 regional offices of the central bank on Tuesday.

RBI said that due to the work related to closure of annual accounts, the facility of exchange/deposit of Rs 2000 bank notes will not be available in 19 regional offices of the Reserve Bank of India on Monday, April 1, 2024.

The central bank said that by the end of trading hours on February 29, about 97.62 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes had returned to the banking system, and only Rs 8,470 crore of notes were still with the public.

The thing to note here is that on May 19, 2023, RBI had announced to withdraw Rs 2000 bank notes from circulation. These notes were asked to be deposited in banks or exchanged with notes of other denominations. RBI continues to facilitate deposit or exchange of Rs 2,000 notes at its 19 offices across the country.

Along with this, RBI clarified that the Rs 2,000 note will remain legal tender. That means it will be a legal tender. After demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in November 2016, RBI introduced Rs 2,000 notes.
