2 dead, 20 injured

Jamshedpur/Ranchi/Kolkata: Two passengers were killed and 22 others injured when coach 18 of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Saraswan district this morning, officials said in a statement.

According to officials, the accident occurred at 3.45 am at Potobeda village near Badabambu station.

South Eastern Railway spokesperson Om Prakash Charan said 18 out of 22 coaches of the 12810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed near Barabambu station in SER's Chakradharpur division.

According to him, 16 out of the 18 were passenger coaches, 18 out of the 20 injured have been discharged from the hospital. Four injured have been kept under observation in the hospital.

All relief and rescue operations have been completed. The Central Reserve Police Force immediately reached the spot. The possibility of Naxalite involvement in this incident has been ruled out.

According to sources, one coach of the goods train derailed and went to the other track. 18 coaches of Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed from this track.

The Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to the 8 injured. Both the deceased passengers were residents of Odisha. The Railways has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has announced Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the two deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Due to this accident, 11 express and passenger trains were cancelled. Routes of six other trains were changed.
