Unnao (UP): Eighteen people were killed and 19 injured when a Delhi-bound double-decker sleeper bus collided with a milk tanker on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district today, officials said in a statement.
The accident took place at 5 am near Jojikot village in Behta Mujawar police station area. District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi said that the bus coming from Motihari in Bihar was moving at a high speed and hit the milk tanker from behind.
He said that 18 people died and 19 were injured in this accident. Orders have been given to investigate the incident.
Rathi said that 20 passengers who were slightly injured have been sent to Delhi by another bus. Lucknow's Additional Director General of Police SB Shriradhakar said that 14 men, three women and a child died in the accident.
According to Bangarmau Circle Officer (CO) Arvind Kumar, due to the severe collision, the bus and the milk tanker overturned. The drivers of both the vehicles have died.
The condition of the injured admitted in the hospital is said to be stable. There were 30 passengers in the bus. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over this incident.
Prime Minister Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Rs 50,000 has been announced for the injured.
