It has been almost three years since the Russia-Ukraine war and this conflict has proved to be very tiring for the soldiers of both the countries. Ukraine has sent its army soldiers to various Western countries for better and faster training. However, recently a report has come out stating that 1700 soldiers of a high profile brigade of Ukraine (which was created on the instructions of President Zelensky) have fled the war before reaching the front line. This situation has become even more difficult for Ukraine, as its army is continuously fighting on many fronts.
According to the Daily Telegraph report, 1,700 out of 5,800 soldiers of Ukraine’s 155th Mechanized Brigade fled the battle. These soldiers were trained by the French Army in Western Ukraine, France and Poland. This battalion also had training in using specific weapons of western countries. This brigade was sent to France to train with the French Army following President Zelensky’s specific request, so that it could be helpful in defeating the Russian Army with the new training.
According to the report, the process of disappearance of soldiers started from France itself. During the training, 50 soldiers already ran away without firing a single shot. That was just the beginning. After completing the training, when the brigade was deployed to guard strategic logistics routes, 1,700 of its soldiers had already fled the area before taking part in the war. This meant that almost a third of the soldiers of this battalion had already decided that they would not participate in the war.
Now after the failure of this brigade, questions are being raised on Ukrainian President Zelensky. Experts expressed displeasure over the decision, saying that if the battalion already existed, then why was there a need to create a new battalion. They also say that old soldiers could be trained and sent to war.
Ukrainian media reacted to this entire incident and wrote, “This is really a crime. This is not the crime of the soldiers or their officers, but it is the crime of the Commander in Chief, the Defense Ministry and the leaders. They have ruined people’s lives and money. What was the need to create a new battalion instead of strengthening the already existing one?”
