Lok Sabha Election 2024 Results: The Lok Sabha elections are over. In the election results, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats. The Congress-led opposition Bharat Alliance also won 234 seats. This time 16 candidates, including seven independents, who were not associated with any of these two alliances, have reached the Parliament with a majority.
Let's take a look at the political journey of these 16 MPs…
Chandrashekhar Azad
Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief Chandrashekhar Azad contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time from Nagina seat in UP and won. Chandrashekhar's victory is also special because he faced a tough challenge from the Indian Alliance candidate as well as BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party. Chandrashekhar won the seat by a huge margin of Rs. 1.5 lakh votes. Chandrashekhar's politics revolved around Dalit and opposition to BJP.
Pappu Yadav
Pappu Yadav, who won as an independent candidate from Purnea seat, has reached the Parliament for the sixth time. This is Pappu Yadav's third victory as an independent candidate in the parliamentary elections and he has won from Purnea all three times. Pappu Yadav has been an MP twice from RJD and once from SP. Pappu Yadav also formed his own political party named Jan Adhikar Party. His wife Ranjit Ranjan is also in Congress. In such a situation, it is believed that Pappu Yadav can move towards Congress and India alliance.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Shiromani Akali Dal, the party of the Badal family, which is contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the first time without an alliance with the BJP, managed to win only one seat in the 13-seat state of Bathinda. Party candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal has won from Bathinda seat. Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Badal family was the power center of Punjab politics. Shiromani Akali Dal has been in the BJP-led alliance from the formation of the NDA till the bill related to the three new agricultural laws was introduced in Parliament. The government has already withdrawn all three agricultural laws, so it is likely that the Badal family's party will return to the old alliance.
Asaduddin Owaisi
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen i.e. AIMIM has managed to win one seat this time. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has reached Parliament from Hyderabad seat. Owaisi is attacking both NDA and India Alliance equally. Although his party is in alliance in Telangana, he is trying to form a third front with Chandrashekhar Rao's party Bharat Rashtra Samiti i.e. BRS. It will be interesting to see with whom he will be seen if he has to stand apart.
Sarabjit Singh Khalsa
Sarabjit Singh Khalsa has won the election as an independent from Faridkot seat in Punjab. Sarabjit is the son of Beant Singh, who was convicted in the case of assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sarabjit first came into the limelight in 2015 when he raised the issue of insult to Guru Granth Sahib. It will be interesting to see with whom Sarabjit, who claims to contest the election at the behest of the Sikh community, will stand.
Amritpal Singh
16 cases have been registered against Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh under serious sections including sedition and National Security Act. Amritpal, who was lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam after his arrest in April last year, contested the election as an independent from Khadoor Sahib seat and won by a huge margin of about two lakh votes.
Vishal Patil
Vishal Patil, grandson of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil, has been elected MP from Sangli seat. Vishal wanted a Congress ticket from this seat but this seat of Bharat Gathbandhan went to Shiv Sena (UBT). When the seat slipped out of the hands of Congress, Vishal Patil contested the election as an independent and defeated the sitting BJP MP Sanjay Kaka Patil by a margin of more than one lakh votes.
Engineer Rashid
Engineer Rashid has been elected MP from Baramulla seat of Jammu and Kashmir. Engineer Rashid has defeated National Conference candidate former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Rashid has been an MLA twice and also contested the 2019 elections but lost. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under UAPA in the terror funding case. Rashid is the first leader to be prosecuted under UAPA.
Patel Umeshbhai
Patel Umeshbhai has reached Parliament from Daman and Diu Lok Sabha seat. Businessman Umeshbhai has been identified as a social worker. He contested the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate and defeated three-time BJP MP Lalubhai Patel. It will be interesting to see with whom Umeshbhai stands when needed.
Mohammed Hanifa
Mohammad Hanifa has been elected from Ladakh seat. Hanifa is active in politics with National Conference. When Congress announced to support Congress on two seats of Jammu and one seat of Ladakh in Lok Sabha elections, Hanifa left the party along with the entire Kargil unit. Hanifa contested the election as an independent candidate and won.
Ricky Andrew
Ricky Andrew has reached the Parliament by winning the election from Shillong seat of Meghalaya from Voice of People's Party. This party is neither in Bharat Gathbandhan nor in NDA. Meghalaya's main party NPP is already a part of BJP-led NDA. In such a situation, it remains to be seen whether VOTPP, which is running with the strategy of filling the vacuum of opposition, stands with the ruling coalition or with the opposition coalition?
Richard Wanlalahamangiha
Richard Vanlalhamangiha, the ruling ZPM candidate in Mizoram, has won. ZPM is not affiliated to any alliance so far. But this has been the trend in the politics of the North-East. The parties of the North-East are working on the formula of supporting the government at the Centre.
YSR Congress has four seats
Outgoing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy's party has won four seats. PV Midhun Reddy, Avinash Reddy, Thanuj Rani and Gurumurthy Maddila have reached Parliament by winning the election on YSR Congress ticket. YSR Congress has stood with the government on many important occasions in Parliament, but the situation was different then and is different now. YSR Congress's rival in state politics, TDP, is part of the BJP-led NDA. With the defeat in the assembly elections, Jaganmohan has lost power.
