There is political instability in South Korea at present. The announcement of imposing martial law and then the U-turn due to the decision is facing the anger of the people. In such a situation, not only their arch rival Democratic Party but also many members of the ruling party have adopted a rebellious tone. There have been many resignations. The sword of impeachment is hanging over the President himself.

Not only the protesters but many cabinet leaders are also opposing the decision of martial law.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, several top Cabinet aides, including President Eun Suk Yeol’s chief of staff, have resigned. It is being told that 12 cabinet ministers have tendered their resignation. Many other top leaders have also offered to resign.

He is accused of corruption and abuse of power

Not only the protesters but many cabinet leaders are also opposing the decision of martial law. Han Dong-hoon, a senior leader of his party People’s Power Party, shook hands with main opposition leader Lee Jae-myung and called the decision wrong. Rallies are being taken out on the streets demanding impeachment of the President. He is accused of corruption and abuse of power.

Demand for impeachment against the President

The U-turn caused by the President’s announcement and the decisions taken thereafter seems to be weighing heavily on them. Parliament can impeach the President. If more than two-thirds of MPs in the National Assembly vote in his favor, he can be impeached. The president’s People’s Power Party has 108 out of 300 MPs in the National Assembly.

Opposition’s ultimatum to the President

South Korea’s opposition party has given President Yoo an ultimatum to impeach him if he does not immediately resign from the presidency. If more than two-thirds of MPs in the National Assembly vote in his favor, he can be impeached. The impeachment motion will be presented to the Constitutional Court.

If at least six of the nine judges approve it, further proceedings will be initiated. During this period, the President will be restricted from exercising his powers until a final decision is made. During this period the Prime Minister will act as interim leader. Elections have to be held within 60 days of impeachment.
