11 years in jail: Asif Ali Zardari's fate changed after the assassination of wife Benazir Bhutto

Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has been elected President of Pakistan for the second time. The voting held in the National Assembly and Legislative Assemblies on Saturday went in his favor. Today he took oath as President. Zardari is the first leader to become the President of Pakistan for the second time. Also, he was the first President who completed his five-year term from 2008 to 2013. In this election, Zardari got 244 votes, while his rival Mahmood Khan Aykai got 199 votes.

Zardari is the first leader of Pakistan to be elected President for the second time and is also the first leader to complete a full term.

After the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, her husband Asif Ali Zardari was jailed on charges of corruption, kidnapping and murder. He had to stay in jail for 11 years. Looking at the history of Pakistan, it did not seem that they would be able to reach the top again.

US Ambassador Peterson wrote in his letter that Pervez Musharraf did not want Asif Ali Zardari to become Prime Minister. Therefore Benazir Bhutto was made the Prime Minister. Asif Ali Zardari was made President in 2008.

Asif Ali Zardari was born in 1955 in a landlord family of the princely state of Mirpur Khas. He graduated in Business Administration from the London School of Economics. His father Hakim Ali Zardari was also a descendant of Bhayat of Mirpur Khas princely state. He had huge land holdings.

He was also a member of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Awami National Party, which was then based in East Pakistan.
