In a major security operation, security forces in Manipur on Monday killed at least 11 armed Kuki terrorists who had come to attack a police station at Borobekara in Jiribam district. According to sources, at around 3:30 pm on Monday, Kuki militants attacked the CRPF camp at Borobekara in Jiribam. The CRPF also retaliated and at least 11 Kuki terrorists were killed in the encounter. A CRPF jawan was also seriously injured.
4 SLRs (Self Loaded Rifles), 3 AK-47s, one RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) and other arms and ammunition have been recovered from the slain Kuki terrorists. Armed militants from the Kuki-Hamar community set fire to several houses and attacked Borobekara police station in Jiribam district and fired several rounds. Following the attack, the CRPF retaliated, killing at least 11 terrorists.
In a related incident, three to four vacant houses of Meitei community at Jakuradhor under the jurisdiction of Borobekara police station were set on fire by unidentified miscreants, suspected to be from the Kuki-Hamar community. Jakuradhor Karong is located about 100 meters from Borobekara Police Station. CRPF, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police personnel have been deployed at Borobekara police station, where a relief camp is also located. Sources said that the attackers were planning to target the camp also.
Despite the presence of armed Kuki terrorists who openly set fire to houses near the police station gate, the security forces did not respond. But when armed terrorists attacked the police station, security forces retaliated, killing at least 11 terrorists. Borobarka police station in Jiribam has been targeted several times in recent months. Earlier yesterday, Kuki militants had attacked Sanasabi, a Matei-dominated village in Imphal East district.
According to the police, armed militants first fired and then threw bombs at Meitei farmers who were harvesting paddy. As soon as information about the attack was received, police and BSF teams reached the spot. There was an encounter between the terrorists and BSF soldiers, which lasted for about 40 minutes. A soldier of 4 Mahar Regiment of BSF was injured in the firing by terrorists. This is the 8th attack in Manipur in the last four days. Apart from one BSF and CRPF jawan being injured in this attack, two women and a doctor have died.
How did the violence start in Manipur?
The violence in Manipur began on May 3 last year, when the Kuki-Jo tribal community resorted to arson and vandalism during a protest against the Manipur High Court order. In fact, the Meitei community has filed a petition in the Manipur High Court demanding that they be given tribal status. The Meitei community argues that Manipur merged with India in 1949. Before this they had tribal status. After completion of the hearing on the petition, the Manipur High Court recommended to the state government that the Meitei community should be considered for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST).
Kuki-Jo community is against giving tribal status to Meitei. He says 40 of the state's 60 assembly seats are already in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, if Meitei gets tribal status then the share of Kuki-Jo community in the reserve will reduce. The majority of the Meitei population lives in the Imphal Valley and the plains of Manipur, while the majority of the Kuki-Jo community lives in the hilly areas. The Meitis are Hindu, while the Kukis follow Christianity.
