Mumbai: In the case of Lata incident that took place in Malvani area of Malad in 2015, the Sessions Court has sentenced four accused to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. 10 other accused were released in the case. On May 6, the judge heard arguments on the sentence. 106 people died in this incident.
Of the four convicts, Raju Tapkar alias Raju Langra (59), Donald Patel (49) and Francis D'Mello (54) were liquor vendors, while Mansoor Khan (35) brought chemicals from Gujarat to Mumbai and distributed them to liquor vendors. Used to do.
Additional Sessions Judge Swapnil Taushikar found him guilty on April 29. Charges were registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bombay Prohibition Act and the Indian Penal Code. Sadosh was found guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder. The judge said there was a lot of evidence in the case and a series of closing arguments.
Special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat cited evidence from more than 200 witnesses. The government side argued that deaths due to adulterated liquor were a recent phenomenon as only one or two people had died in Maharashtra in the last two decades. The statement of the witness who had helped Tapkar in selling spurious liquor was recorded while the witness was about to drink liquor at the haunt of one of the accused.
The deceased also gave their post-mortem statements and those who lost their eyesight in the incident also gave their statements. There were 16 accused in this case, out of which one died while one is absconding.
On June 18, 2015, about 106 people died after drinking adulterated liquor in Laxminagar area of Malwani, Malad. Malvani police received information that a person had defecated. The police admitted him to Shatabdi Hospital for treatment. He was identified as Kanai Harijan. On interrogating its owner Marimuthu Harijan, it was revealed that Kanai and another employee Phoolchand Yadav had consumed liquor in Tapkar's hangar. Yadav also fell ill and was taken to hospital, Kanai died. During investigation, many other people were shifted to the hospital after drinking alcohol at this place. A total of 106 died and 75 became ill. The case was handed over to the crime branch.
Further investigation revealed that the poison was made from methyl alcohol. Tapkar was arrested on 19 June 2015 and revealed the names of his suppliers. The accused were arrested from Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The government ordered an investigation under the Chief Secretary.
