It is clear that the party that came to power through referendum has now been replaced by the Bangladesh Army. However, this is not the first time that the army has tried to stage a coup in the country. Even before this, the Bangladesh Army had tried to remove Sheikh Hasina from the throne 10 times.
1. Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
On 15 August 1975, a Bangladeshi army officer hatched a conspiracy to oust Sheikh Hasina's father Mujibur Rahman from power. Meanwhile, a lot of violence broke out in Bangladesh. Ultimately, the entire family including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina was in London with her younger sister. That's why her life was saved.
2. Rebellion of Khondkar Mustaq Ahmed
After Sheikh Mujibur, Khondker Mushtaq Ahmed took over the throne of Bangladesh. The army once again prepared a plan to remove him. On 3 November 1975, Brigadier Khalid Musharraf and Bir Uttam staged a coup. When Major General Ziaur Rahman did not support the coup, he was also put in jail.
3. Assassination of Brigadier Khalid Musharraf
Leftist military personnel along with ethnic and social parties staged a second coup on 7 November 1975. Brigadier Khaled Musharraf was hanged and Ziaur Rahman was released from prison. Ziaur Rahman was appointed as the next President of Bangladesh.
4. Hijacking of President Ziaur Rahman's plane
In September 1977, a plot was hatched to assassinate Ziaur Rahman. Flight 472 was hijacked during his foreign trip. However, this coup attempt failed.
5. Assassination of President Ziaur Rahman
Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad of the Bangladesh Army once again wanted to kill Ziaur Rahman. On 30 May 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated along with his bodyguards during a visit to Chittagong.
6. Repealed Constitution
Mohammad Ershad did not stop here. On 24 March 1982, he also removed President Abdus Sattar from office and repealed the Constitution. Ahsanuddin Chowdhury took over as President on 11 December 1983.
7. Conspired with Abu Saleh Mohammed Naseem
Bangladesh Lieutenant General Abu Saleh Mohammad Nasim attempted to oust the then President Abdur Rahman Biswas on 19 May 1996. However, the attempt failed and Nasim was arrested.
8. The army chief revolted
Army Chief Lieutenant General Moin Ahmed led a military coup on 11 January 2007. During this time Fakhruddin Ahmed was made the head of the government and Yazuddin Ahmed became the President of Bangladesh. However, elections were held in 2008 and the Awami League came to power.
9. Revolt against Sheikh Hasina
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) planned the biggest coup on 25-26 February 2009. During this time Sheikh Hasina sought help from India and the then Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee left no stone unturned to support Sheikh Hasina. However, the coup proved to be a failure and the rebel soldiers were imprisoned.
