Onion prices are continuously increasing due to lack of new crop and increase in exports. According to a report by Economic Times, prices have increased due to crop failure in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The price of best quality onion has increased from Rs 51 to Rs 70 per kg in Pimpalgaon market of Nashik. At the same time, removal of import duty on onion by Bangladesh has also boosted exports.

Onion prices have broken the record of the last 5 years. The price of onion per kg in Nashik’s benchmark Lasalgaon market is Rs. The five-year high figure of 54 has been crossed. Due to reduced supply and increased demand, the wholesale price of onion has increased by 30 to 35 percent. Due to rising prices, onion has broken the record of the last 5 years. In December 2019, the price of onion reached Rs 5,656.
