A huge financial and commercial agreement has come to light for the domestic matches of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Team India. Just before the start of India vs West Indies One Day International (ODI) series, important information regarding the new title sponsorship rights of the Indian cricket team has become public. According to reliable media reports from the sports world and information given by Cricbuzz quoting sources, non-banking financial company (NBFC) Muthoot Fincorp has acquired the much-awaited title sponsorship rights of the Indian cricket team for domestic international and prestigious domestic tournaments for the next two domestic seasons. However, at the time of writing, a formal press release and official announcement from the Indian Cricket Board is awaited, but the deal has been finalized in the commercial circles.
According to reports, the talks for this new title sponsorship contract had started around a base price of around Rs 4 crore 85 lakh (₹4.85 crore) per match, while the final agreement is highly likely to be settled at around Rs 4 crore 80 lakh per match. This amount once again proves the strong brand value of Indian cricket. Earlier, the title sponsorship rights of the Indian domestic seasons were with the leading private sector bank ‘IDFC First Bank’, which was paying Rs 4.2 crore to BCCI for each international match. With the new agreement, there is a direct and bumper increase of around Rs 60 to 65 lakh in BCCI’s per match earnings, which further strengthens the global economic dominance of the Indian board.
The original deadline for the Invitation to Tender (ITT) issued by the BCCI was set for August 13. Had there been an open competition among various corporate houses through a competitive bidding process at that time, the title sponsor would have been announced in mid-August itself. According to market experts, during that time, due to high base price and economic uncertainties, many big companies were reluctant to come forward in direct auction. When no formal competing bidder had emerged by August 13, top strategists on the Indian board initiated back-channel and bilateral talks with potential corporate partners. Under this strategy, SBI Life has entered into an important partnership with Reliance’s Campa and global AI giant OpenAI’s ‘ChatGPT’ as associate partners of BCCI. This joint commercial structure will be fully effective from the upcoming India vs West Indies ODI series.
This historic agreement will officially remain in force until March 31, 2028. During this two-year period, the title rights of all international matches and major competitions of the domestic circuit (such as Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) played on Indian soil will be solely owned by Muthoot Fincorp. If we talk about the international calendar, about 35 major international matches are to be held in India during this period, which includes 10 much-awaited Test matches, 12 exciting ODIs and 13 quick T20 International (T20I) matches. This simply means that the board is going to earn a huge income of more than Rs 170 crore from domestic international matches alone.
An interesting coincidence is that the first match played under this new commercial agreement will be held on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Muthoot Group’s home state Kerala. There is immense excitement among local cricket lovers and fans across the country regarding this first ODI match to be held between India and West Indies. The biggest reason for this is that in this match, two of the biggest superstars of Indian cricket—captain Rohit Sharma and run-machine Virat Kohli—will once again be seen wearing the blue jersey and spreading their magic on the field. The presence of veterans on the home ground and the introduction of new sponsorships is all set to make this new season of Indian cricket very memorable and commercially explosive.
