Jajpur: In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the Brahmani river near Gokarneshwar temple under Dharamshala police limits in Jajpur district on Sunday. The youth has been identified as Pankaj Kumar Swain, resident of Deuli village under Dharamshala block of the district. Family discord was said to be the reason behind his suicide attempt.
According to the information, at around 4 pm, Swain reached Gokarneshwar bridge on foot and suddenly jumped into the Brahmani river. At the time of the incident, some people passing through the bridge saw the young man jumping into the river and raised an alarm.
On receiving the information, police and fire service personnel from Kuakhia and Chandikhol reached the spot and started a joint rescue operation. After an hour of search, the young man was pulled out of the river in critical condition. He was taken to Dharamshala Community Health Center for treatment by the local police.
Later, as his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
