Austin has issued this order at a time when the US and its allies Israel and Hamas are trying to reach an agreement to reduce tensions in the region after the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyya in Tehran and prominent Hizbul commander Fuad Shukur in Beirut. Officials fear retaliatory attacks from Iran and Hezbollah after the killings. This is why the US is increasing its military presence in the West Asia region.

America ready to help Israel

Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder said in a statement that Austin spoke to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant and reiterated the US commitment to make every effort to defend Israel. According to Ryder, in his conversation with Galant, Austin referred to strengthening the US military presence and capabilities in West Asia to counter the growing regional tensions. The USS Abraham Lincoln, present in the Asia Pacific region, has already been ordered to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group in the region. The USS Theodore Roosevelt will soon begin its withdrawal from West Asia.

Taking care of the common citizens

Defense Secretary Austin said last week that the USS Abraham Lincoln would arrive in the Central Command region by the end of this month. It was not clear on Sunday what Austin's latest order meant or how soon the USS Abraham Lincoln would depart for West Asia. The aircraft carrier is equipped with F/A-18 fighter jets in addition to F-35 fighter jets. Ryder also did not say how soon the USS Georgia guided missile submarine would arrive in the region. He said Austin and Gallant also discussed Israeli military operations in Gaza and the importance of minimizing civilian casualties.
