Will former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif's praise of Modi bring a change in India-Pak relations?

New Delhi: A day after the formation of NDA government under the leadership of Narendra Modi at the center, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif thanked Modi for the victory and said that this victory is a proof of your leadership. With this message, he requested to change hate into hope to make the dreams of the citizens of both our countries come true.

In this message sent on the social media platform, he said that we should take advantage of this opportunity and give a good shape to the future of two billion people of South Asia.

Responding to Sharif's message in just two hours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India's commitment to peace, security and progress and said “however, terrorism and dialogue cannot go together.”

It is well known that when Modi and his cabinet members took oath as Prime Minister, India invited all the neighbouring countries except Pakistan.

Modi congratulated Nawaz Sharif's younger brother Shahbaz Sharif when he took oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. In response, Sharif congratulated Modi but that too a day later and in just one line.

Whatever be the attitude of Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif publicly stated on May 30 that Pakistan has violated the agreements made with India in 1999 known as the 'Lahore Declaration'. Before making this admission, he blamed the current government of Pakistan for the souring of relations between the two countries.

The Sharif family returned to power in the elections held in Pakistan in March this year. There is growing hope of better relations between the two countries. On April 18, Punjab Chief Minister and political heir of the Sharif family, Maryam Nawaz, gave a cordial speech about India. She gave this speech while addressing the Sikh community who had come on a pilgrimage to Kartarpur Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev. In which she emphasized on the shared heritage and potential economic cooperation between the two countries and said that there is a 'family-like' relationship between the two countries.

This attitude of Maryam Nawaz shows that the entire Sharif family is extending a hand towards India, but the terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir coinciding with the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi make a mockery of the spirit of peace, cooperation and security between the two countries.
