Although he had imagined this stage of love in words, it has become a reality in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Here the love of a husband and wife was so deep that even death could not separate them. A heart-rending incident in Murshidabad’s Kandi has shocked everyone. Shankar Mandal and Niyati Mandal’s married life of almost fifty years ended with the death of both of them in a single day. The village and the family members are in mourning due to this incident.
Shankar Mandal (85) and his wife Niyati Mandal (68) have three children – a son and two daughters. All are married and have children. Shankar was suffering from age-related ailments for a long time. When his condition deteriorated a few days ago, he was taken to Bharatpur Rural Hospital, from where he was brought home after treatment but his condition did not improve and he died on Tuesday night.
When Shankar's body was brought to the courtyard of the house, Niyati ran to the house and weepingly put her head on her husband's chest. Within a few moments, Niyati also passed away. The family members thought that she had fainted due to grief and tried to revive her by sprinkling water on her, but it did not work. The doctor was called and after examining her, he told that Niyati had also died. About three minutes after Shankar's death, Niyati breathed her last.
The family and neighbors are in deep shock due to this incident. The people of the village say that they had never seen such a scene. The family prepared for the last rites of Shankar and Niyati and both were cremated together at the village crematorium.

Anant Mandal, the son of the deceased couple, said, “I never remember seeing my parents separated. They agreed on everything and never quarreled. When my father scolded me, my mother would console me. They lived together and died together.” Anant said, “It is painful to have lost my parents together, but there is also peace in the mind as both of them have gone together.”
