The consequences of drinking alcohol illegally are always fatal. To speed up this process, illegal distilleries add many toxic alcoholic chemicals to the wine. Due to mixing of chemicals like urea and oxytocin in raw liquor, methyl alcohol is formed which causes death of people.
According to scientists, as soon as methyl enters the body, the chemical reaction intensifies. Due to this, the internal organs of the body stop working and death occurs immediately. This was the reason that in July 2022, 42 people died after drinking similar poisonous liquor in Gujarat and 100 people were admitted to the district hospitals of Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Botaj.
Talking about Punjab, in 2020 there were about 104 deaths due to drinking poisonous liquor in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran. A few days ago, 21 deaths due to drinking poisonous liquor in Tibbi Ravidaspura, Sunam, village Gujran of Didba block of Sangrur district is not only a tragedy, but also raises many worrying questions on our system.
Does the occurrence of such incidents on the occasion of Lok Sabha elections raise many questions? Along with this, the oppression of a particular poor class of people also highlights many doubts. Punjab has seen many such incidents in the last few years also. Notable among these are the consecutive deaths due to alcohol in Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Batala in 2020 where this figure has crossed 112. At that time, there was widespread protest against these incidents and there was also a demand to fix the responsibility of the administration.
Two years later, the Supreme Court also expressed concern over the investigation of this case and also pulled up the then state government. In February 2023, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had made strong comments on this issue, but the story is still the same. We will also have to find a solution as to what are the reasons why there is a need to make country liquor at home? Administration and police need to be vigilant against those making and buying illegal liquor. It is also a major need of the hour for governments and intellectuals to run awareness campaigns against drugs.
