Western disturbance and cold wave alert

The Meteorological Department (IMD) in its new weather forecast has given information about the impact of a new western disturbance on North-West India between January 10 and 12. Due to its impact, light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected in the western Himalayan region. Also, light to moderate rain is expected in the plains of northwest and central India.

Possibility of storm and lightning on January 11

According to the Meteorological Department:

  • There is a possibility of thunderstorm and lightning in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on January 11.
  • There is also a possibility of hailstorm in Rajasthan on January 11.

Rain forecast in South India also

Due to the active cyclonic circulation in the southern Bay of Bengal:

  • Light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on January 11 and 12.
  • There may also be heavy rain in these areas on January 11.

In the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures were recorded below zero degrees Celsius in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

  • The minimum temperature in Western Madhya Pradesh was 1.6 degrees Celsius.
  • The minimum temperature in northwest India is expected to drop by 2 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours. After this the temperature may increase by 2-4 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave and fog warning

  • Cold wave alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on January 9.
  • Cold wave will continue in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on 9 and 10 January.
  • Dense fog conditions will persist in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh till January 10.

The Meteorological Department advises that people keep an eye on the weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
